AirDrop Shield: know when strangers can see your Mac

AirDrop “Everyone” is handy for a minute and easy to forget. Left on in a train, café or conference, it shows your Mac’s name to everyone nearby and lets strangers send you files and pictures. AirDrop Shield keeps that setting in sight.

What you see

• Off or Contacts Only: a green AirDrop button. Nothing to do.
• Everyone, on a network you trust: still green, since that’s your choice at home.
• Everyone, on an open or weakly secured network: the button turns orange and suggests turning it down.

Change it

1. Click AirDrop at the top of the World map.
2. Click “Open AirDrop settings…”. System Settings opens on the AirDrop & Handoff page.
3. Set AirDrop to Contacts Only or No One.

AirDrop Shield uses the same network check as Coffee Shop Armor, so it knows when you’re on a network worth being careful on.
