injection-bench

The scripts, in full

Everything needed to repeat the comparison of garak, Augustus and PyRIT on one local target. Read the results page first; copy any file from here. Nothing in these scripts sends data anywhere except to your own local model server.

# injection-bench

A small, reproducible comparison of open-source **prompt-injection scanners** (garak, Augustus, PyRIT) on **one local target**,
with an independent **ground truth** so each tool's report can be checked against what is actually true.
Everything runs on one Mac against a local model (Ollama): no cloud API, no API key, nothing leaves the machine.

## Layout

| Path | What it is |
|---|---|
| `bench/target.py` | The system under test: a document summariser served over HTTP (OpenAI-compatible and plain REST), in five defence arms |
| `bench/make_corpus.py` | Builds the frozen ground-truth corpus `bench/corpus.json` (harmless planted instructions, scored by a canary token) |
| `bench/run_canary.py` | Ground truth: runs the corpus through every arm and scores it deterministically |
| `bench/stats.py` | Wilson score interval |
| `bench/make_report.py` | Builds `results/report.html` from the results |
| `tools/run_garak.py` | garak against one arm (its `promptinject` and `latentinjection` probes) |
| `tools/run_augustus.py` | Augustus against one arm (its `promptinject` and `latentinjection` probes) |
| `tools/run_pyrit.py` | PyRIT 1.1.0 against one arm (`PromptSendingAttack`, stacked converters, `SubStringScorer`) |
| `tools/run_all.py` | Runs the tools against every arm, one after another |
| `results/` | Raw outputs: `canary.json`, `tools.jsonl`, each tool's own reports, and `report.html` |

## The target and its arms

Everything a scanner sends is treated as the **document to summarise** (untrusted content), the indirect-injection setting.
Only the defence changes between arms; model, settings (temperature 0, fixed seed) and task do not.

`none` · `instruct` (a rule not to obey the document) · `delimit` (`<<` `>>` markers) · `datamark` (spaces replaced by `^`) ·
`datamark-random` (a new random marker per request).

## Run it

```
ollama pull gemma3:4b-it-q4_K_M
python3 -m venv .venv && .venv/bin/pip install garak 'datasets>=3,<4'        # garak needs datasets below 4
python3 -m venv .venv-pyrit && .venv-pyrit/bin/pip install pyrit             # separate: it wants a newer datasets
GOBIN=$PWD/bin go install github.com/praetorian-inc/augustus/cmd/augustus@latest
python3 bench/target.py &                                                     # the target, on :8800
python3 bench/make_corpus.py && python3 bench/run_canary.py                  # ground truth
python3 tools/run_all.py                                                      # the three tools x five arms
python3 bench/make_report.py && open results/report.html
```

## Honest limits

One small model, one machine, one date, deterministic decoding, a few hundred attempts per cell. The ground truth uses harmless
canary payloads that look nothing like the scanners' payloads, so a tool's *absolute* rate is not comparable with another tool's;
what is comparable is whether each tool notices that a defence changes the outcome. Read the intervals, not just the bars.
